Residential Design: Aging in Place
In this project, a residence and community center in CO. was designed to explore the questions: How can we explore connection? How do we support healthy aging? Inspired by the cycles of nature with a focus on connection to nature, light, and people: this lifelong home will be a refuge for people of all abilities, backgrounds, and ages.
Foundations
Lifelong Home Criteria
This home has a focus on visitability. A no-step entry, generous hall, and door widths throughout all three floors, and an accessible bathroom for guests on level 1.
This home has a focus on universal design. Design choices were made to support aging, vision impairment, wheelchair access, and more.
Specific material choices and forms were chosen to support safety and the prevention of falls. Including already installed grab bars.
Though initial material costs may be high, ongoing costs should stay low with lifelong materials and control over the daylight in the home. The lower level also has considerations to be a separate dwelling.

Floorplan
This home was planned for any person of any ability. It can suit a multi-generational family, renters, aging adults, or anyone else. Special attention was paid to lifelong home criteria so the home could be enjoyed by all.
